Description

A fine example of an early 17thc James 1 period oak joyned coffer....it is decorated with punchwork, scratch carving and attractive nulling...I particularly like the wide "muntin", ( the wide flattish piece of wood which holds the panels in place) always an early feature and the original hand made iron "butterfly" hinges....all the boards are original ....with a very good natural colour and patina it would add greatly to any collector of period English oak furniture.

English. C1600-20.

A joyned coffer is a storage chest constructed using traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, prevalent in English domestic interiors during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from native English oak, featuring frame-and-panel construction held together with wooden pegs or trunnels rather than modern metal fasteners.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand- cleft timber, traditional tool marks, authentic patination, hand-cut joinery, and period-appropriate ironwork or locks.

This piece can serve as a functional anchor in a hallway or living space, contrasting effectively against minimalist contemporary backgrounds or complementing rustic schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the historic timber.
