A porringer is a traditional vessel type featuring one or two flat handles, historically used for porridges, broths, and liquids from the 17th century onwards, evolving into decorative and ceremonial pieces by the Edwardian era.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring hand-hammered bodies, cast applied handles, and chased or embossed decorative motifs produced by traditional silversmithing workshops.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks struck into the metal, which include the makers mark, the sterling standard lion passant, the city mark such as the leopards head for London, and the specific date letter for the year of assay.

An antique silver bowl can be integrated into modern schemes as a mantelpiece accent, a catch-all tray on a surface, or styled within a display cabinet to add metallic texture and historical contrast.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip desirable patination and oxidisation.
