How do you transport a secretaire bookcase safely?

Always separate the two halves before moving. The upper glazed section lifts off the base carcase, though it might be held by a couple of screws at the back. Take all the loose shelves out of the top first. They'll smash through the glass doors if left unsecured during a bumpy journey.

My grandmother left us this large secretaire piece and the fall front feels a bit stiff on one side when we try to pull it down to use the desk, is there a way to fix that without ruining the wood?

The brass hinges often collect dirt and old wax over the decades. A stiff drop-front usually means the pivot points just need a light clean rather than invasive woodwork. Check the brass quadrant hinges on the sides if it has them. Sometimes a loose screw stops the mechanism sliding back into the carcase smoothly. Rubbing a dry candle along the wooden runners can help if the main drawer itself sticks.

Do the small inner drawers come out?
