Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian secretaire bookcase is a two-part storage piece featuring a glazed upper bookcase section positioned above a lower cabinet containing a fold-down or pull-out writing drawer fitted with internal compartments. Originating earlier and perfected during the nineteenth century, it provided a space-saving combination of book display, document storage, and writing area.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers laid over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Construction details typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, brass lock mechanisms, glass door panes, and flame mahogany panel veneers on drawer fronts and cupboard doors.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetailing on drawer joints, period-correct brass hardware, original lock plates, and minor visible imperfections in the mouth-blown glass. Examining the secondary timber on drawer bases and checking for hand-carved mouldings or turned feet also indicates mid-to-late nineteenth-century manufacture.

Integrate the piece into a contemporary living room, hallway, or study as a functional focal point alongside modern lighting and understated decor. Utilise the glazed upper section for curated book or ceramic displays while maintaining the lower desk section for modern stationery storage.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft lint-free cloth and apply natural beeswax polish once or twice per year along the wood grain. Keep the cabinet positioned away from direct sunlight, radiators, and significant humidity fluctuations to prevent wood shrinkage, veneer movement, or surface finish degradation.
