How heavy are solid pine bookcases?

Two people can usually manage a standard size piece up a flight of stairs without too much trouble. Tall bookcases usually split into two sections. The top simply lifts off the base cupboard. This makes moving them through tight modern doorways straightforward.

I have a tight space in my hallway and I need to know if the shelves can be taken out to fit taller books?

Most nineteenth-century examples feature fixed shelves. The carpenter nailed them directly through the side of the carcase to give the tall structure rigidity. If you find one with adjustable shelving, it relies on a system of wooden pegs. You pull the pegs out and reposition them in different holes to alter the gap. Check the uprights for these pre-drilled holes before buying if shelf height matters to you.

Do they need waxing often?

Stripped pine thrives on a good beeswax polish once a year. The wax feeds the dry timber and builds up a protective surface against spills and central heating. Apply it sparingly with a cloth and leave it to harden for an hour. Buff it back with a stiff brush to get a sensible shine.

The back boards on the one I am looking at have gaps between them, is that a problem when storing small paperbacks?

Gaps in the backboards are normal. Pine shrinks across the grain as it ages in dry houses, pulling the tongue and groove joints slightly apart. It rarely causes problems for standard books. Small paperbacks sit well clear of the back anyway. If a gap looks wide enough to swallow thin pamphlets, just line the rear of that specific shelf with a strip of card.
