Do all the sections fit together?

Most units from the same maker and period stack cleanly. The interlocking joints at the top and bottom of each section were standardised in the factory. Mixing pieces from different manufacturers or different decades often causes problems. A Gunn section won't seat properly on a Globe Wernicke base.

I have an alcove in my living room that I want to fill, but I am worried about the glass doors sticking if the floor is uneven. Will that happen?

The scissor mechanisms require a level base to function well. If the floor drops away, the wooden carcase twists slightly, throwing the metal tracks out of alignment. That makes the doors catch on the runners. You can solve this by packing the plinth with wooden shims. Once the base sits flat, the tiers above will square up and the doors should glide easily.

How do I clean the wood?

Wipe the timber with a damp cloth to remove dust. Dry it straight away. Feed the finish occasionally with microcrystalline wax. Avoid aerosol sprays.

My grandfather gave me a set of these shelves years ago, and I notice that some of the glass panes have bubbles in them while others are clear. Why is that?

The bubbly glass is usually original cylinder glass. Factories produced this by blowing a large glass cylinder before cutting it open to flatten the sheet. It leaves natural ripples and small air pockets in the glass. Smooth panes are normally later replacements. When a door broke, owners had a local glazier cut modern float glass to fit the frame. The newer glass lacks those minor imperfections.
