How many breakfront bookcases come up in a year?

Around seventy-eight are listed on Sellingantiques in a year, spread across a hundred and forty-one different dealers. That spread means no single dealer defines the category, and the mix of timbers, sizes and periods stays wide from month to month.

What period do most of these date from?

The dated field runs from 1745 to 1960. The two largest labels are '19th Century' and 'Victorian', both eras rather than years, so a good deal of the dating is approximate by the dealer's own choice. Where decades are given, they cluster in the 1910s, 1920s and 1900s, alongside the 1880s and 1860s. Eighteenth-century pieces are present but scarce, with '18th' appearing in only ten titles.

Are open breakfront bookcases common?

Yes. Open bookcases with no doors account for a hundred and forty-two of seven hundred and eighty-six titles. That is more than the titles mentioning glazing, doors and display cabinets put together. Several open examples are described with adjustable shelves on movable bearers.

Which timbers turn up besides mahogany?

Walnut, oak, rosewood, satinwood and painted pine make up most of the non-mahogany entries. Burr walnut alone is named in thirty-six titles. Beyond those, unusual timbers surface once or twice each: laburnum, goncalo alves, satin birch, birds eye maple, golden elm, padouk and pollard oak.

Do breakfront bookcases come in pairs?

Several titles offer a pair or near-pair of matching breakfronts, including pairs of waterfall and open bookcases. They are a genuine curiosity in the archive rather than a regular occurrence.

Are these bookcases all English?

The great majority are English. Other origins are rare but real. Italian, French, Flemish, Irish, Scottish, Northern European and Anglo-Indian examples each appear a handful of times, along with one Burmese carved piece.
