Rare Georgian Purple / Amethyst Glass Mell Decanter C1830

Technical Description

A very fine 19th century glass mell decanter. It has a wonderful narrow elegant neck, a polished pontil and is a very unusual colour. In normal room light, the decanter looks a soft amethyst but under brighter light seems to be a light purple or sea blue...quite stunning.

Date & Origin

England, c1830. Period of William IV.

Condition

Age-related wear as shown. No chips cracks or restoration, clean and clear.

Dimensions

Height: 22cm Diameter: 17cm.

Historical Context

Hand-blown around the time McVitie's was founded as McVitie & Price's biscuit bakery in Edinburgh.
