Sugar castors, also known as dredgers, emerged in the late 17th century when refined sugar became a prized commodity among affluent households, used to sprinkle sugar over desserts and drinks.

They are typically constructed from sterling silver using techniques such as spinning, casting, and hand-piercing for the intricate fretwork on the lid, often secured with a bayonet or screw fitting.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hallmarks stamped on the body and lid, which indicate the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside period-appropriate weight and construction flaws.

In a contemporary setting, a silver castor can be displayed on an open shelf, sideboard, or dining table to introduce polished metallic textures and historical character.

Silver should be cleaned periodically with a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and soft cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage intricate piercing and hallmarks.
