Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 18th-century oak coffer functions as traditional English country house storage furniture. The piece possesses a dark brown timber finish with a warm, glossy patina, showing typical signs of age and surface wear across the surfaces. Detailed craftsmanship includes an unusual four-panel front arrangement with recessed rectangular panels, flanked by double end panels, and a plank lid resting on plain upright stile feet. A continuous band of carved vertical fluting runs horizontally along the upper frieze just below the top edge. Measuring 70 cm high, 128 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, the coffer stands at a practical height for domestic use. Positioned in an entrance hall, living room, or bedroom, this sturdy wooden chest serves as a functional storage receptacle for blankets, linens, or household items while functioning as a decorative surface. The dark oak tone and straightforward period style integrate smoothly into both traditional and rustic interior schemes. The substantial hinged lid lifts to access the interior compartment, while the solid timber construction provides stability for daily use in a modern home.

FAQs

An antique oak coffer is a wooden storage chest with a hinged lid, historically used in homes from the medieval period through the 18th century to store linens, clothing, and valuables.

18th-century oak coffers were crafted using solid English oak joined with mortise and tenon joints held by wooden pegs, featuring hand-planed recessed panels and decorative carving.

Authentic pieces demonstrate evidence of hand-sawing and planing, wooden peg joinery, natural shrinkage around joints, and authentic patination on the timber and original iron fittings.

An antique coffer can be positioned in a hallway to serve as a storage bench, or placed at the foot of a bed to store bedding while adding historical texture to the room.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
