Roman Glass Beaker with Wheel Cut Bands 1st - 2nd Century Ce

17th century
Description

Technical Description

A free-blown beaker-shaped glass cup with delicately thin undulating walls, a slightly indented concave base and an uneven knocked-off rim. The material is remarkably well preserved on one side of the vessel. A nearly-transparent glass with the slightest of pale green and amber hues and is almost colourless when viewing through the preserved area.

The wheel-cut decoration on the vessel wall has been well executed with continuous horizontal striations, the central pair are more defined shallow grooves while the outer lines are surface level and appear to be tooling marks.

Date & Origin

Roman, Eastern Empire. Early to Mid Imperial Era, 1st - 2nd century CE.

Condition

Well-preserved areas, pitting, weathering and iridescence to the surface with some patches of encrustation. A professional support restoration has been carried out, this is only visible while under a UV light.

Dimensions

Height: 9cm Diameter: 8.7cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
