Pate-sur-pate, translating to paste-on-paste, is a ceramic decoration technique where liquid porcelain slip is built up in translucent layers to create a three-dimensional relief design prior to firing. Popularised in the late 19th century by manufacturers such as Minton and Sevres, it produces cameo-like artistic effects on ceramic surfaces.

These decorative plates were crafted from fine bone china or hard-paste porcelain, featuring hand-applied white slip, liquid gold gilding, and enamel glazes. Multiple kiln firings at varying temperatures were required to fuse the delicate slip layers and burnish the gilding.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed manufacturer backmarks, year codes, or artists initials near the base rim. High-grade pate-sur-pate display plates exhibit characteristic depth, precise translucent relief carving, and burnished raised gold decoration.
