Description

An unusual teardrop shaped pair of Art Nouveau silver dishes. Pierced edges finely decorated with Pansy flowers and leaves. Hallmarked Samuel Jacobs London 1904

Art Nouveau - An ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic line and was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewellery and glass design, posters, and illustration. It was a deliberate attempt to create a new style, free of the imitative historicism that dominated much of 19th-century art and design. About this time the term Art Nouveau was coined, in Belgium by the periodical L’Art Moderne to describe the work of the artist group Les Vingt and in Paris by S. Bing, who named his gallery L’Art Nouveau. The style was called Jugendstil in Germany, Sezessionstil in Austria, Stile Floreale (or Stile Liberty) in Italy, and Modernismo (or Modernista) in Spain.

Art Nouveau emerged in the late 19th century, characterised by organic, fluid lines, asymmetrical forms, and motifs inspired by natural plant and floral shapes.

Silversmiths commonly utilised methods such as piercing, repousse, chasing, and casting to create intricate openwork patterns and sculptural details.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, metal purity, makers mark, and date letter, alongside natural patination and hand-finished construction marks.

These pieces function effectively as accent objects on sideboards or coffee tables, contrasting clean modern surfaces with intricate historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires non-abrasive silver polish applied sparingly with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh dips that strip the aged patina, and storing in low-humidity environments.
