This small pair of antique Victorian Sheffield plated candlesticks dates from 1880 in the English Country House style, constructed from silver plate and copper with a silver colour. Each piece stands on a shaped square base decorated with foliate borders and rococo scrollwork, rising through a splayed socket featuring visible copper bleed-through where age has worn the plating. The ornate decoration includes intricate cast relief work along the stepped square feet and scrolling details around the drip pans, alongside a warm reddish copper show-through that highlights the underlying metal beneath the bright silver surfaces. Measuring 14 cm high by 11.5 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep, these compact candlesticks sit easily on a mantelpiece or side table. They function well for traditional lighting in a living room, dining room, or study, adding period character to an interior shelf or cabinet display.

FAQs

Sheffield plate was invented in the 18th century as a process of fusing a layer of sterling silver over a core of copper. This technique allowed craftsmen to create metalwork that visually mimicked solid silver while offering greater structural strength at a lower cost.

These items were manufactured by fusing sheets of silver to a central copper ingot before rolling and shaping the metal. Ornate embellishments on Victorian examples were frequently cast in lead or silver alloy and soldered onto the silver-plated body.

Authentic pieces often exhibit silver wear where the underlying copper substrate becomes visible, a trait known as copper bleeding. They also tend to possess hand-chased ornamentation, turned seams, and a characteristic weight distinct from modern electroplated items.

Position the pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or formal dining table to create visual balance. Combining polished silver surfaces with dark timber or stone backgrounds highlights the contrast of the metalwork.

Dust regularly with a soft, non-abrasive cloth to prevent tarnishing. Avoid aggressive silver polishes or abrasive chemical dipping solutions, as excessive polishing can strip away the remaining layer of original surface silver.
