Pricket candlesticks originated in early medieval Europe, primarily within ecclesiastical settings, to hold large wax candles securely. Unlike candle sockets, a pricket incorporates a vertical spike at the top onto which the base of a candle is pressed.

Italian pricket candlesticks were commonly carved from native softwoods such as pine, poplar, or lime, often fitted with an iron spike at the top. Many were finished with gesso, gilding, or paint, though many surviving examples display bare carved timber.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved joinery, hand-forged iron spikes, and signs of age such as wax residue, shrinkage cracks in the wood, or remnants of original gesso decoration along the carved crevices.

Position pricket candlesticks in groups on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to introduce vertical scale and structural texture. They can be displayed with thick pillar candles or left unlit as sculptured wooden accents.
