Technical Description 

An engraved 18th century Jacobite Sympathy wine glass. It has a bell bowl engraved with a Jacobite Carnation, leaves and a large moth. A band of air beads within a solid section at the base of the bowl. Opaque twist stem consisting of two pairs of spiral tapes outside a white gauze. Conical foot

Date & Origin 

Netherlands or Germany, c1760

Condition

Excellent, age-related wear as shown. No chips cracks or restoration.

Dimensions 

Height: 15.6cm Rim diameter: 5.8cm, Foot diameter: 7cm.

Historical Relevance 

Jacobites and their love of carnations are well documented. We have included a portrait of Louisa Maria Stuart from 1704, known to the Jacobites as Princess Royal, which hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It shows her large red and white carnation above her right breast with further carnations in her hair.

Comments

This glass comes from the Michael Wallis collection which took over 45 years to build and contains over 250 drinking glasses, covering all forms from the 18th century, many exceptionally rare. They will all be presented by Exhibit over the coming weeks and months.
