Florentine giltwood lighting is defined by intricate hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf applied over a chalky gesso layer. Common features include classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, cherubs, scrolling foliage, and architectural domes.

These fixtures were carved from softwoods such as pine or lindenwood, coated with gesso, and gilded using red or yellow clay bole beneath thin sheets of gold leaf. Glass panes were fitted into the timber frames to protect candles from draughts.

Authentic giltwood displays subtle tool marks from hand carving, natural wear exposing the underlying red bole or white gesso, and age-related shrinkage cracks along the wood grain. Modern reproductions often use moulded resin, uniform bronze powder paint, or synthetic lacquers instead of true leaf gilding.
