Siena Marble

The natural beauty of Italian Siena marble has been prized for its luster and natural beauty throughout history. Giallo Siena marble was formed eons ago when limestone was subjected to intense pressure and heat. The calcite crystals formed like millions of tiny gems locked together, giving the natural Giallo Siena marble its beautiful luster.

Ormolu (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Neoclassical lighting gained prominence during the late 18th and 19th centuries, drawing design inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity. Artisans adapted traditional urn shapes into decorative lighting bases, combining imported Italian marble with sculpted gilded metalwork.

These pieces typically combine carved natural stone, such as yellow Siena or green serpentine marble, with gilt bronze known as ormolu. Ormolu involves applying a gold-mercury amalgam to bronze, producing a detailed and durable gilded surface finish.

Authentic period pieces feature substantial weight due to solid stone construction, fine hand-chased details on the metal mounts, and natural variation in the marble grain. Historical examples often show signs of conversion from oil or gas fittings to early electrical sockets.

Position a matching pair symmetrically on a dining room sideboard, hallway console table, or wide mantelpiece to create balanced structure. The rich yellow tones of Siena marble pair effectively with neutral wall finishes and dark wood cabinetry.

Clean the marble surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with pH-neutral water and mild soap, avoiding acidic solutions that etch natural stone. Dust the gilded bronze mounts gently with a dry brush and refrain from using abrasive metal polishes, which strip historical gilding.
