Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Combination silver and tortoiseshell boxes gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, particularly between 1890 and 1915. They were crafted as functional decorative items for vanity sets and dressing tables, often featuring Neoclassical inlay motifs.

These pieces typically consist of a hallmarked sterling silver body raised on shaped legs, topped with a polished natural tortoiseshell lid inset with precious metal inlay known as pique work.

Authentic items display official assay hallmarks stamped into the silver body or rim, indicating the maker, silver purity, and year of manufacture. Natural tortoiseshell displays subtle organic irregularities and depth under light, unlike synthetic celluoid imitations.

Place the box on a bedside table, dressing table, or vanity tray to hold daily jewellery pieces. Combining metallic antiques with modern glass or ceramic surfaces creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Silver polish should be applied sparingly with a swab to avoid touching the tortoiseshell, as chemical cleaners can dry out or damage natural shell surfaces.
