Welsh Oak Coffor Bach

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Havard and Havard

A Georgian miniature coffer or chest with a hinged lid, small, cockbead-edged drawer and simply but strikingly pierced bracket feet.

These small Welsh coffers, usually associated with marriage, would have formed part of a bride`s dowry and would have been used for the storage of her most prized personal possessions. They were often passed down through the female line in families. This example made entirely of beautifully patinated oak was probably made in Glamorganshire. Some of the brass ware may be original.

Probably Glamorganshire, circa 1760-80.
