Rare Scottish 'hammermen Of Glasgow' Coin Wine Glass C1836

Technical Description
An exceptional 19th-century wine glass dating to 1836.
It has a conical bowl with slice cutting towards the base. It is engraved with a detailed crown with a hammer below within a cartouch of feathers as well as the initials PF within a circular feather cartouche on the reserve. Sits on a bubble stem containing a silver four-penny coin dated 1836. Ball knop above a conical foot with polished pontil.
The crown and hammer represent the ''Hammermen of Glasgow'' which is a charity based on engineering trades founded in 1536 and still exists today. The Hammermen embraced blacksmiths, silversmiths, armorers, sword makers, and locksmiths to name but a few but was incorporated to regulate the metal working trades with the Burgh of Glasgow as well as supporting their members and widows and dependents should they fall on hard times.
Their Moto was ''By Hammer In Hand, All Arts Do Stand''
We can''t recall seeing another example and the glass should probab...ly be in the Glasgow City Museum.

This glass comes from the Michael Wallis collection which took over 45 years to build and contains over 250 drinking glasses, covering all forms from the 18th century, many exceptionally rare. They will all be presented by Exhibit over the coming weeks and months.
