Early 20th Century Carved Oak Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a high quality solid oak bookcase from the 1920's and formed part of an extensive suite. Very difficult to see off the proportions but the glass to the side doors is all bevelled and is much more pronounced in the flesh. The piece is nice and sturdy due to the stretchered base in-between the carved legs. the central carved door projects slightly from the side doors and hides three adjustable shelves that give good private space. All locks are working and the key is present. In one piece and in exceptionally good condition for it's 100 years.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean Revival furniture produced in the early 20th century draws inspiration from 17th-century English designs, characterized by dark or medium oak timber, geometric mouldings, floral relief carvings, turned legs, and sturdy stretcher frames.

Cabinets from this era typically feature solid oak framing, hand-fitted panel doors, turned legs joined by stretchers, and astragal glazing bars crafted to hold glass panels in decorative geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, such as quarter-sawn oak grain patterns, subtle age-related patination, original brass or iron hardware, and hand-carved floral or scroll motifs on wood panels.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight the dark wood frame, and style the interior shelves with modern ceramics, framed artwork, or books to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage.
