Victorian Scottish jewellery gained immense popularity during the 19th century, largely due to Queen Victorias fondness for Balmoral and the Scottish Highlands, inspiring designs featuring local stones, agates, and Celtic motifs.

These pieces traditionally utilise silver settings combined with locally sourced hardstones such as jasper, bloodstone, carnelian, and quartz varieties like cairngorm, often complemented by paste glass gems.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate closures such as c-clasps and long pin stems, traditional hand-engraved silver work, and genuine hardstone inlays rather than modern synthetic substitutes.

While traditionally worn to fasten heavy woollen plaids or scarves, these brooches can be pinned to contemporary blazers, lapels, or heavy coats, or alternatively displayed within a shadow box frame as decorative wall art.

Preservation involves storing pieces in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, cleaning silver gently with a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical dips, and protecting softer stones from impact.
