Description

We could see why this fine quality Japanese bronze (signed - Circa 1890) was converted to a lamp during the first half of the 20th Century - it's because, it was perfectly suited to such a transition. The child is portrayed trying to catch something just out of sight, the light shade tantalisingly obscures his quarry, drawing the viewer ever closer towards the light. The bronze is mounted upon its original carved wooden base, both patinated bronze and base retain a lustrous colour. Now sensitively restored and safety tested, this impressive lamp (69.5 cm high) is ready to be used and enjoyed.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Secure Transit

FAQs

The Meiji period (18681912) marked an era of rapid modernisation in Japan, during which master metalworkers turned their traditional samurai armour-making skills towards intricate decorative arts and export bronzes for Western markets.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional lost-wax casting methods with high-copper alloy bronzes, often finished with chemical patination treatments to achieve deep brown, black, or variegated surface tones.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy construction, fine chiselling details beneath the patination, naturalistic textures, and occasionally artist signatures or foundry marks hidden within the casting.

Pair the sculptural bronze base with a simple, neutral contemporary lampshade to let the historical narrative stand out as a focal point on a sideboard or side table.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes, which can strip away the historical patination and damage the metal surface.
