This Edwardian 18ct gold pendant dates from 1910 and measures 63 x 40 mm including the bail, with a weight of 17.45 grams. The oval piece holds a hand-painted miniature portrait in profile of a young lady wearing a pink dress and a blue cloak, under a glass screen. A wide black enamel band borders the portrait, decorated with four small engraved gold crosses at the cardinal points. Encircling the black enamel is an outer border of fifty-six uniform seed pearls held within a yellow gold mount. A matching pearl-set bail is attached to the top, decorated with vertical rows of seed pearls and topped with a single round seed pearl finial. The solid gold rear surface shows a textured finish. Today, this wearable antique serves as a necklace pendant, suspended from a chain around the neck as a personal adornment for formal wear, special occasions, or everyday heritage jewellery styling. The metalwork displays a polished 18ct gold finish alongside the glossy black enamel and luminous white pearls. The glass screen over the portrait shows minor surface scratches and tiny chips along the outer edge. The hallmarks on the piece include the 18-carat gold standard stamp alongside London assay office marks and the date letter for 1909.

Edwardian portrait pendants typically feature delicate metalwork, miniature hand-painted portraits, and classical influences. They frequently incorporate seed pearls, black or white enamel accents, and high-carat gold settings.

These pendants were commonly crafted from 15ct or 18ct gold, encasing miniature portraits painted on vellum, copper, or ivory. Decorative borders often utilised seed pearls, enamel inlay, and protective glass covers.

Authentic pieces can be identified by examining gold hallmarks, construction methods, and period-appropriate painting techniques. Original items show precise enamel application, hand-set pearls, and gentle wear consistent with age.

These pendants can be worn on modern gold chains as a focal piece or mounted within framed shadow boxes for decorative display. They also complement contemporary minimalist attire when worn individually.

Enamel and seed pearls require gentle care without exposure to water, chemicals, or perfumes. Wipe clean with a dry, soft cloth and store flat in a fabric-lined box away from direct light.
