This Windsor champagne bucket or wine cooler dates from 1960 in the Mid-Century Modern style, produced by Christofle of Paris to a design by Lino Sabattini. The piece is fashioned from silver plate with a highly polished, reflective silver finish over a cylindrical body. Distinctive details include a flat rim and two geometric, rectangular horizontal side handles attached to the upper exterior. The object measures 19 cm high, 24.1 cm wide, and 17.2 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this wine cooler serves as a functional barware accessory for chilling wine or champagne. It is well-suited for display and use atop a dining room sideboard, credenza, or drinks trolley during formal dinners or casual gatherings.

FAQs

Mid-century modern metal barware emerged in the mid-20th century, combining utilitarian function with streamlined, sculptural forms. Designers during this era focused on minimalist silhouettes and high-polish finishes to suit modern entertaining styles.

Champagne buckets from this era are frequently constructed from base metals such as brass or nickel coated with electroplated silver. The manufacturing process ensures structural durability while providing a smooth, highly reflective surface.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer or designer hallmarks stamped on the base or near the rim. Additionally, distinct geometric construction, precise solder joins, and proportional balance indicate period craftsmanship.

A silver-plated wine cooler can serve as a table centrepiece during formal dining or sit atop a sideboard alongside glassware as part of a curated bar display. When not in use for beverages, it can also function as an accent vessel on a console table.

Clean the surface gently using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialist silver polish to remove tarnish and finger marks. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, or dishwashers, which can strip or scratch the thin silver plating.
