Nutmeg graters became highly popular during the Georgian era when whole nutmeg was an expensive luxury commodity grated at the dining table or in the drawing room to flavour food and beverages.

These pocket-sized containers were typically constructed from sterling silver, often featuring hinged lids, internal steel grater inserts, and hand-engraved crests or initials.

Authentic pieces usually bear clear silver hallmarks including the makers mark, lion passant, and date letter, alongside period-appropriate hand-engraving and patination.

This small decorative object can be displayed as part of a curated collection on a desk, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a mantlepiece.

Clean antique silver infrequently using specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, and store it in a dry environment to prevent excessive tarnishing.
