FAQs

Imari ware is a type of Japanese porcelain traditionally exported from the port of Imari in the Saga prefecture, originating in the early 17th century during the Edo period.

Imari plates are crafted from refined white porcelain clay, hand-painted underglaze in cobalt blue and overglaze in iron red, often highlighted with gilt details before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic antique pieces typically feature hand-painted brushwork with slight imperfections, a characteristic color palette of underglaze blue and iron red, and sometimes base marks indicating the kiln or period.

An Imari charger plate can be displayed upright on a stand as a focal point on a sideboard or mounted on a wall to introduce rich colour and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Antique porcelain should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water with mild soap when necessary, avoiding abrasive materials, dishwashers, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the surface pigments.
