Rare 17th Century Stained Oak Coffer

Description

A rare 17th Century Oak Coffer with coloured front, of good overall colour and in good original condition.

Thought to be from a small group of coffers made in Dorset around Circa 1655.

The panels are carved with Tulips.

Interestingly there is an Antique dealers label on the back, possibly victorian, it appears to refer to a premises on Portland Street in London.

This seventeenth-century Jacobean coffer is made from dark brown stained oak and stands on sturdy square legs. The front displays three prominent panels carved with detailed tulip motifs, separated by narrow vertical rails decorated with repeating elliptical carvings. Horizontal bands along the top and bottom edge feature continuous interlocking geometric motifs, while a central brass keyhole escutcheon is fitted to the upper rail. The side uprights are richly embellished with carved leaf patterns in low relief.
