Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a framed wooden storage chest constructed with joinery techniques typical of the Jacobean and Carolean eras. Featuring a hinged lid and panelled sides, these pieces were primary household storage solutions for linens, textiles, and valuables.

Jacobean coffers were constructed primarily from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. The decoration typically involved relief carving, gouge work, or punchwork directly into the oak panels, often finished with dark stains or natural wax.

Authentic period coffers feature hand-planed timbers, irregular peg construction, original iron strap hinges or loop hinges, and historical wear pattern around the base and keyhole. The presence of tool marks on unseen surfaces and natural shrinkage in the oak panels also indicate period construction.

An antique coffer can be positioned in an entryway as a bench, at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or in a living area as a central low table. Pairing dark carved oak with simple modern upholstery creates a balanced textural contrast in contemporary interiors.

Maintain oak coffers by keeping them in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Clean surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and preserve the historic finish.
