Soda syphons, or seltzer bottles, became widely popular in late 19th and early 20th-century Europe, particularly in French bistros and cafes. They were manufactured to hold pressurised carbonated water, often etched with the local aerated water manufacturers name and town.

These vessels were crafted from thick, heavy-gauge moulded or blown glass designed to withstand high internal pressure. The siphon heads and internal dip tubes were typically made from pewter, lead-tin alloys, or tin-lined metal to resist corrosion from carbonated liquid.

Authentic period examples exhibit thick glass, natural wear around the base, and original metal siphon heads often stamped with maker marks. Acid-etched typography or moulded waffle patterns on the glass body also indicate early production.
