Pioneered by Michael Thonet in the mid-nineteenth century, bentwood technique allowed solid timber to be steam-curved into functional furniture, making lightweight work stools widely utilised by trade artisans across Europe.

Thonet furniture primarily utilises beech wood, which responds exceptionally well to steam bending, combined with pressed solid timber or woven cane seat panels secured with wood screws.
