Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Georgian bureau is constructed from dark brown Cuban mahogany with solid drawer fronts, sides, and oak linings throughout. The exterior displays a sloping front lid with a central brass keyhole escutcheon, above a configuration of five graduated drawers fitted with brass swan-neck handles and raised, beaded keyhole escutcheons. Fine inlaid stringing borders the drawer fronts. The heavy and solidly constructed piece rests on original ogee bracket feet and features steel locks alongside an old replacement leather writing surface on the fall front. It measures 117 cm wide, 112 cm tall, and 56 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library, study, or living room, this practical writing desk provides surface space for correspondence and laptop use, whilst the multiple drawers offer organised storage for stationery, documents, and household items. The traditional aesthetic complements period and transitional interiors alike, serving as a functional workspace or a focal display surface for decorative objects.

FAQs

A Georgian mahogany bureau is a writing cabinet produced during the reign of Kings George I through IV (17141830), characterized by a sloping hinged front that opens to a desk surface, positioned over multiple drawers.

These pieces typically utilize solid or veneered mahogany, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary timbers, and solid brass drop handles with backplates or keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetails, irregular drawer linings, natural shrinkage signs in the timber, authentic oxidation on the underside, and original cast brassware.

A Georgian bureau works as a compact home office desk in a contemporary living room, study, or hallway, pairing dark polished wood against neutral walls or modern minimalist artwork.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources, clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth, and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
