Description

A handsome antique mahogany bureau of good proportions. The fall front opening to reveal a fitted interior above an arrangement of four long graduated drawers, fitted with brass oval plate handles and escutcheons. Raised on shaped bracket feet. A classic and practical piece with good rich colour and attractive figuring to the drawer fronts and fall.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is general surface wear including age-related marks, scratches. There are some marks and historic stains visible to the fall front.

FAQs

A bureau is a writing desk featuring a sloped, hinged flap that opens downwards to provide a flat writing surface. When opened, it reveals interior compartments, pigeonholes, and small drawers, situated above a series of full-width storage drawers.

Bureaux from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to pine or oak carcasses. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass handles, brass escutcheons, and steel locks.

Authentic period bureaux feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original oak or pine drawer linings, and natural wear around the keyholes and slant-front hinges. Uneven timber shrinkage on the back boards and original cast brass fittings also indicate period construction.

Position the bureau in a quiet alcove, home office, or living room to create a focal point that doubles as hidden workspace. Pair the dark mahogany wood with modern table lamps, contemporary artwork on the wall above, or neutral soft furnishings to balance the piece.
