This Georgian writing bureau is made from mahogany, satinwood, and wood veneer, exhibiting a warm brown colour with crossbanded inlay across the slant fall-front and drawer fronts. The piece stands upon shaped bracket feet and incorporates brass swan-neck handles alongside decorative brass escutcheons on the graduated drawers. The fall-front opens to reveal an interior fitted with pigeonholes, small drawers, and a concealed secret well beneath a sliding cover, accompanied by a replacement leather writing surface finished with gilt and blind tooling. Measuring 91 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the bureau provides compact storage and a functional workspace. Suitable for a gentleman's library, study, or living room, the item serves as a practical writing desk while offering enclosed storage compartments for stationery and documents. The warm timber tones and traditional brass hardware suit both period interiors and rooms with classic furnishings. The refined proportions allow placement against walls or in smaller corners where space is limited.

A writing bureau is a slant-front desk design developed in the late seventeenth century, featuring a hinged sloping flap that opens to reveal internal writing compartments above a chest of drawers.

Georgian bureaux were typically constructed using solid pine or oak carcases veneered with high-grade timbers such as mahogany or walnut, finished with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period bureaux display hand-sawn secondary timbers inside drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and natural age-related patination around keyholes and drop handles.

A traditional writing bureau operates effectively as a compact workstation in an alcove, hallway, or study, concealing laptop equipment and paperwork when the flap is closed.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the surface veneer.
