Description

This is a 19th Century French silver plated and parcel gilt sugar sifter or saupoudreuse. The bowl of the piece is of shell form and is pierced with foliate designs. It is also gilded. The handle has repoussage shell and floral designs to it. It bears a maker's stamp to the bowl.

It comes in a brown faux leather box, lined with ivory coloured silk.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sugar sifter spoon is a specialised serving utensil featuring a pierced or perforated bowl, designed to sprinkle powdered or caster sugar evenly over fresh fruit and desserts during formal nineteenth-century dining.

French sugar sifters were commonly forged from sterling silver, high-purity coin silver, or electroplated base metals, frequently featuring interior silver-gilt or vermeil bowl finishes to prevent corrosion from fruit acids.

Authentic French pieces feature official maker and purity hallmarks, finely hand-engraved or cast relief decoration, distinct shell or foliage perforations, and period-correct construction technique.

An antique sifter spoon can be displayed inside a glazed dining room cabinet, styled inside its open presentation case on a sideboard top, or grouped with historical table accessories.

Clean gently using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive silver polishes on gilded surfaces, and store inside an acid-free fabric lining to minimise oxidisation.
