Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver sweet basket, often referred to as a bonbon dish or sugar basket, was traditionally used on dining and side tables to serve confectionery or sugar during the late 19th century. These pieces reflected the formal dining etiquette of the era, frequently featuring decorative engraving, beaded borders, and hinged or fixed overhead handles.

Most British pieces from this period were crafted from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent copper for structural durability. Decorative elements were typically achieved through hand-engraving, chasing, or repousse work alongside cast pedestal bases and beaded wire trims.

Authentic Victorian silver carries official assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling silver, a makers mark, a town mark, and a specific date letter. For items produced in 1877, a duty mark depicting the profile of Queen Victoria will also be present alongside these stamps.

This type of piece can serve as a decorative focal point on a sideboard, console table, or dining surface. It can be displayed empty to highlight its engraved surface detail or utilized to hold wrapped confections, dry items, or small botanical arrangements.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a dedicated silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish and oxidisation. To prevent accelerated tarnishing, store the item in a dry environment away from high humidity and direct contact with rubber or sulfur-containing materials.
