Historical Relevance

Hollow stem glasses are the smallest group or classification of wine glasses from the 18th century, accounting for less than 0.5% of wine glasses made during that period. The hollowed stems saved on glass weight and were made to counter the Excise Act of 1745-46 which was a heavy taxation on the industry. They were only made over a very short space of time making them a less common find today.
