Technical Description
An excellent and unusual example of a mid 19th-century Glas Ink well. It has its original mushroom stopper above a brass lid. The main body has prism and flute cutting with diamond cuts on the base. Sits in its original decorative brass stand.
Historical Relevance
Robert Stephenson's Britannia Tubular Bridge is opened.
Its designer, Robert Stephenson, constructed two main spans with rectangular iron tubes 460 feet long. The bridge itself was 1,511 feet overall and novel in construction since the box sections were constructed on shore and then floated into the straits to be lifted into place.
