Date & Origin England, c1780. Period of George III Condition Some small chips and nibbles around the foot rim as expected. Dimensions Height: 31.5cm Foot Diameter: 16cm. Technical Description A late 18th-century facet cut glass candlestick. The scallop rim and vesica cut sconce sits on top of a diamond facet cut stem with a single hexagonal slice cut neck rim. Sits on a helmet vesica cut foot with a scalloped rim. Historical Relevance On June 2nd 1780, an Anti-Catholic mob led by Lord George Gordon marches on the English Parliament, leading to the outbreak of the Gordon Riots in London. On June 7th the Gordon Riots are ended by the intervention of troops.
