Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, English silversmiths combined sterling silver mountings with dark tortoiseshell panels. These luxury vanity items often incorporated pique work, an art form where precious metals were inlaid directly into organic materials.

These boxes feature hallmarks indicating solid sterling silver frames, combined with polished hawksbill sea turtle shell for the lids and side panels. Interior compartments were typically lined with velvet or silk to protect delicate items.

Authentic items bear full British hallmark stamps specifying the city assay office, silversmith mark, silver standard, and date letter. Natural tortoiseshell shows subtle variations in opacity and mottled coloration under light, unlike uniform plastic imitations.

Position the box atop a bedroom vanity unit, dressing table, or bedside table alongside glass perfume bottles or framed art to add a classic accent to modern interiors.

Store the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, or dry heat sources which cause organic shell to warp. Polish silver elements using a soft microfibre cloth designed for silver, taking care not to rub harsh chemicals into the tortoiseshell surface.
