Technical Description
A rare example of an 18th-century air twist ale glass. Long round funnel bowl engraved with a double saltire of barley and a single hop. Sits on a very unusual double knopped air twist stem above a conical foot with a snapped pontil.
Standard glasses in this form are normally three-part construction, however, this glass is a two-part. The single and only join being above the lower knop (which explains why the air twist tails off towards the base of the knop). This is rare construction technique for an ale glass and is more akin to the construction of composite stems and Newcastle light balusters. The lower knop and foot are all made from the 2nd gather of glass. The glass could be slightly earlier than 1750 as a result. I can''t recall seeing anothe...r example.
