Mid 17th Century Oak Coffer With Original Feur De Lis Carved Decoration

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Culvertons

The original carved fleur-de-lis decoration to the front panels; its deep and lustrous colour & patina; early iron ring hinges & escutcheon (key-plate), all combine to make this a particularly desirable & attractive oak coffer. A fleur de lis is a stylized lily composed of three petals bound together near their bases. It is especially known from the former royal arms of France, in which it appears in gold on a blue field. The decorative use of this motif; the use of chestnut to form the back panels, base & candle box suggest a French origin, however the surrounding decoration would not be out of place on an English coffer - so possibly a crossover of ideas & craftsmanship before the Second Hundred Years.
