Woven by the Afshar tribe of south-east Persia in the 19th century, this wool tribal rug displays a classical medallion carpet tradition adapted in a graphic style. The soft, lustrous pile uses natural dyes of deep red and indigo blue, showing minor corrosion to the indigo dye in the field alongside very good condition overall. A central navy blue stepped medallion sits upon a dark red geometric field, decorated with oversize anchors at the ends of the medallion, dancing figures, a detailed checkerboard surround, geometric figures, and hooked diamond patterns. Stylised decorative borders frame the entire piece, which measures 160 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. The rug fits well in an English Country House setting, offering a traditional textile accent for floor placement in living areas or studies.
