Chinese export traveling trunks were custom-made furniture pieces crafted in China primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries for Western merchants, diplomats, and travellers returning to Europe and America.

These trunks typically feature a lightweight, insect-repellent camphor wood core, often wrapped in leather or lacquered canvas, and decorated with hand-painted motifs, brass tacks, and traditional Chinese hardware.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hand-stitched leather, natural wear patterns, traditional dovetail joinery, camphor wood aroma, and characteristic hand-painted floral or figural motifs typical of treaty port workshops.

Such trunks function well as striking coffee tables in a living room, at the foot of a bed for extra storage, or as a statement accent piece in an eclectic or globally influenced interior.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, occasionally treating dry leather with specialist museum-grade conditioners, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on painted surfaces.
