This is a superb example of rare pre-electricity lighting with eight branches for candles only, and with a single burnished ball and a hanging chain. It is unrestored. An eight branch candelabra signified burning many candles at once. An expense justified only in the most wealthy households when great numbers of people gathered together, or when a particularly large room had to be lit. Most chandeliers of this size were made for use in churches, town halls and assembly rooms.The few chandeliers that were made for private residences were installed in the rooms used for formal entertainment - the hall or the ballroom.
