Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century standard lamp belongs to the Victorian period and comes in a brass finish with a pleated white fabric shade. The design includes a tall telescopic fluted column stem, a detailed Corinthian capital, a square stepped base, and ornate paw feet at the bottom. The construction uses brass and fabric materials, with the brass elements showing a polished metallic sheen and the shade displaying vertical pleats. The lamp stands 125 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece fits naturally at the end of a sofa or in a quiet reading corner of an English Country house style interior, providing functional ambient lighting. The lamp connects to power via a visible electric flex and plug extending from the base. The electrical system has been rewired for contemporary use, and the piece remains in excellent condition.

FAQs

A telescopic standard lamp is a free-standing floor light featuring an adjustable central column that allows the height of the lamp to be manually extended or lowered.

Traditional standard lamps from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were typically constructed from cast or extruded brass, bronze, or copper, supported by weighted bases to ensure stability.

Authentic period lamps display heavy cast components, detailed architectural motifs such as fluted columns or Corinthian capitals, original thumb-screw adjustment mechanisms, and natural patination in unpolished areas.

Position the lamp alongside a reading armchair or at the end of a sofa to provide focused task lighting while adding architectural height and warm metallic contrast to contemporary room layouts.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes that strip natural oxidisation, and ensure all internal electrical wiring is periodically inspected by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards.
