This is an excellent, neat, solid sterling silver-mounted claret jug.
It is clearly hallmarked on the side of the neck with the assay office mark for Birmingham 1888 and the maker''s mark of Hirons & Plante. There is also a partial hallmark inside the lid.
The silver is in excellent condition. The elegant handle is well-attached to the glass body . The lid carries a crest, beautifully engraved and very clear. The glass body is clear and free of stains. The star burst base is crisp. There are a couple of small surface scratches on the glass body, not unusual given the age of the item.
