Grand Large Antique English Boulle & Cut Crystal Inkwell by Vickery, London, C.1890

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A fine quality Victorian Boulle (Tortoise Shell Intricately inlaid with cut brass, then brightly polished) inkwell, purchased as part of an entire desk set. I had to purchase each piece individually so am selling as individual items.

The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.

This is an impressive inkwell made from a heavy piece of crystal with a beautifully cut hobnail base and cut up the sides from the base. There is a removable glass liner for easy refilling and cleaning.

Signed by the top-flight retailer, "J.C. Vickery,Regent St. W1" (London), this piece also marked "To The King & Queen". John Collard Vickery was honored with Royal Warrants of HM the King, HM the Queen, HM Queen Alexandra, TRH the Prince and Princess of Wales, HM the King of Portugal, HM the King of Spain, TM the King and Queen of Denmark, HM the Queen of Norway, HM the King of Sweden and the Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein.

Superb condition, the base measuring 7" x 7"and the glass inkwell measuring 3" x 3", the entire piece measuring approximately 4 1/2" tall.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
