A Pair of Porcelain Table Lamps with Pate Sur Pate Decoration and Gilt Bronze Mounts 19th Century.

19th century
Description

A quality pair of late 19th-century French Celadon Porcelain Table Lamps. Re-Wired & Pat Tested.

Each lamp is formed as an elegant classical vase with a softly coloured celadon-green porcelain ground, beautifully contrasted by finely modelled white pâte-sur-pâte classical female figures each carrying lamps. The figures are depicted in elegant Neoclassical dress and poses, creating a particularly refined and sculptural appearance.

The porcelain bodies are further enhanced by exceptionally decorative cast gilt-bronze mounts, side handles, collars, upper mounts and substantial ornamental bases with laurel leaves. The handles have an architectural Neoclassical character.

The combination of celadon porcelain, white pâte-sur-pâte relief and finely executed ormolu/gilt-bronze mounts is characteristic of the taste for historicist Neoclassicism that was particularly fashionable in France during the second half of the 19th century. The pâte-sur-pâte technique—literally “paste on paste”—involves building up successive layers of liquid porcelain slip to create translucent, three-dimensional relief decoration. The technique became particularly associated with important European porcelain production during the 19th century.

French, late 19th century 46cm tall to the top of the bulb holder x 19cm wide across each handle x 13cm deep

Date of Manufacture

Andrew Lovatt Antiques has dated these Pate Sur Pate Table Lamps to the 19th Century.

A matched pair of late 19th-century French Neoclassical table lamps brings classical elegance to any interior. Each lamp takes the form of an urn featuring a pale celadon-green porcelain body decorated with white pâte-sur-pâte relief scenes of classical female figures carrying vessels. Cast gilt-bronze mounts, architectural side handles, collars, upper mounts, and substantial laurel leaf bases complement the porcelain. The lamps stand 46 cm tall to the top of the bulb holder, measure 19 cm wide across each handle, and have a depth of 13 cm. These decorative pieces suit placement on a sideboard or side table in a living room, dining room, or hallway, adding a refined historicist accent to a traditional or eclectic interior scheme.

Pate-sur-pate, translating from French as paste-on-paste, is a decorative technique developed in the mid-19th century where translucent white clay slip is built up in successive layers onto an unglazed coloured porcelain body to form a low-relief cameo design.

Lamps from this period typically feature high-fired porcelain vessels decorated with enamel or slip decoration, mounted onto cast bronze or brass bases that were often mercury-gilded, known as ormolu.

Authentic pieces exhibit varying translucency and depth in the raised white clay layers, distinct hand-painted detailing under magnification, and characteristic age-appropriate wear or oxidisation to the gilt bronze mounts.

These lamps function effectively as a symmetrical pair placed on a contemporary sideboard, console, or mantelpiece, paired with simple neutral silk shades to contrast structured modern lines with classical detailing.

Dust porcelain surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, and clean metal mounts using a dry cloth without liquid polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip original gilding.
