A Pair of French 19th Century Bronze Candlesticks in the Form of Chinese Figures

An exceptional and unusual pair of French gilt bronze candlesticks, modelled as 18th-century Chinese male figures dressed in traditional costume, each supporting an elaborate torchère surmounted by a fluted candle nozzle with a separate removable sconce.

The figures stand upon circular, stepped bases, beautifully decorated with intricate bands of interwoven dragons, reflecting the fascination with Oriental design and chinoiserie prevalent in 19th-century France.

A particularly decorative and finely cast pair, demonstrating excellent quality of workmanship.

Date: Circa 1870

Dimensions: Height 35 cm; width 11 cm; depth 11 cm.
